How it works

Pressure units split into two families: SI-derived ones (pascal, bar) and the imperial PSI, plus a few defined by physical reference (the standard atmosphere, a column of mercury). All are exact multiples of the pascal.

Energy units span an enormous range: the electronvolt describes single-particle physics, the joule and kilojoule cover everyday mechanics, and the kilowatt-hour is how electricity is billed. They are all exact multiples of the joule, so converting between them is a single multiplication.

Worked examples

A tyre pressure of 32 PSI in bar

32 PSI × 0.0689476 = 2.206 bar.

Assumptions and limits

  • Pressure values are gauge-agnostic: convert the number as given, whether it is absolute or gauge pressure.
  • The mercury-column units (mmHg, inHg) use the conventional definition at standard gravity, not a temperature-corrected one.

Frequently asked questions

Why does 1 atm not equal exactly 1 bar?

The bar was defined later (1 bar = 100,000 Pa exactly) as a round SI-derived unit, while the standard atmosphere was fixed historically at 101,325 Pa from mean sea-level pressure. The two are close (about 1.3% apart) but not identical.

What is an electronvolt used for?

It is the energy an electron gains crossing a 1-volt potential difference — convenient for particle and atomic physics, where a joule would require an inconveniently tiny number. 1 eV ≈ 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ J.
